WORLD OF NADA

It was a big and important day for all of us because it's the opening ceremony that night! All of the groups would perform for the first time here and we were given 8-minute performance each. We started the day by having general rehearsal at the main hall. Everybody gathered and was ready with the props. We stood in a circle with the hosts in the centre explaining what we had to do, the turns, stage entrance, and other details. Some of the non-Spanish speaking countries, including us, were a bit confused at first because they kept talking in Spanish. We would do the performance outside while the rest would have to wait inside. I was excited that I got to see the dances I had never seen before. When it was nearly our turn, we became very nervous because we thought it would be the real performance as everybody would watch us for the first time. We had to really bring it to make a great impression. After it was done, we had lunch, rest, prepared ourselves, had dinner, and left.

The ceremony took place in a city called Zafra. We arrived at 8pm I think but the ceremony itself started at 10pm and before that there was a parade. We all had to wait at this outdoor terrace where we could see the locals hanging around. We had to wait very long but I enjoyed this moment because I could see the groups wearing their amazing costumes, taking pictures with them and the locals, we just mingled with everybody. And when the sky was getting darker, we started walking towards the stage.

The ceremony started and each group was called one by one passing the front of the stage. In the middle of the way, I could already hear the cheers of the audience. I assumed there were lots of people. And it was much more crowded than I expected! Hundreds of seats were fully occupied. The people who are having their dinner at the restaurants nearby could watch us too. This is huge!!
And the show began. The groups look so much better with their costumes. However, the stage floor was made of woods and it was flaky. It was a nightmare for the groups who performed without their shoes on, even us who were wearing socks, the wood flakes harmed our feet pretty badly. Despite the inconvenience, I believe we all still managed to pull it off and wow the audience.

After it's all done, we sat backstage having baguette. I was enjoying the moment watching the locals. It was already around 1.30 am but even the little kids were still running around. I was a bit surprised we had not gone back yet. I wonder what time we would arrive at the uni because we had to do something the next morning. I thought we would have to perform at late hours like this and arrived at dawn, sleep for a few hours, and start the day again only that day. But in fact, our schedule would be pretty much the same every single day! Let us begin our Spanish life.

It was a chilly morning. I couldn't open my eyes when my alarm rang, but no time to slow down because we had to leave. We still had to prepare ourselves, do the final packing, and have breakfast. We met the hosts and they still looked fresh after the party last night. They even had to do a performance! It was sad to say goodbye with everybody but I was excited at the same as we moved on to the next city, Cáceres!
Our last picture with everybody in Ribera del Fresno

We went there by bus and the journey took only 1,5 hours. I slept as soon as the bus moved and suddenly we arrived at this big building. It felt so fast and I wish it took longer. As I got off from the bus, the main entrance looked pretty crowded. Everybody was very busy rehearsing. As I was still trying to get what was going on, I saw three people wearing tags who seemed to be our hosts as they were watching us. I approached them and this one guy introduced himself. He is Benji and he is the one who is responsible for our group. He is very friendly so I feel very welcomed. Plus, his English is very clear and fluent too. He introduced two girls beside him, the one with curly pony-tailed brunette hair is Janire and the blonde one is Azahara. They would take care of us as well.

Benji gave me this green file which is the festival manual. The rules, schedules, everything is written there. Hwoa.. this is very different from the first festival and gonna be huge, I thought. I could already know everything from the first place. As my friends took the stuff from the bus, Benji and the others took me around while explaining things. The building is much bigger than I expected. I found out later that this is a university, I.E.S. Universidad Laboral to be exact.

We passed the main hall, where we could have our rehearsal, the canteen where each groups had to eat on schedule, and they took me to our rooms which is on the second floor. Most of the rooms are for two people while some only for one. The bathroom and toilets are shared, but only for one group so each group was not allowed to use other groups' bathroom. And the committee did take things seriously. When they showed me around, someone from other group was using ours and they knocked and asked her to leave. We better don't mess with the rules.

Benji then told me there would be a meeting at 7pm that must be attended at least by each groups' officials while the rest could do whatever they want. Some of my friends decided to go to the city center while I attended the meeting. I really wanted to come along but I still had 2 weeks here, so I didn't really mind.
We gathered at a room and waited for everybody to come. I was very excited knowing there were many countries participating and we would meet them everyday since we stayed under one roof. They are from Poland, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, Mexico, Chile, Georgia, Cuba, Timor Leste, and Senegal. The meeting itself is basically to welcome the participants and to know general view of the festival.
With Laura and Fransisco, the festival directors. The guy with white T-shirt is Benji.

That night, after having dinner, our group rehearsed to prepare tomorrow's opening ceremony. Then we slept early since we were still tired and there would be lots of things to do the  next day.

It had been only a few days, but today would be our last day here. Whaatt?! That means we would do our last performance here as well. So sad :(. We did nothing in the morning and afternoon. The city is very small and while we were having free time, nothing opened because of siesta. We actually could use the swimming pool, but it took 15 minute walk and we were a bit lazy that day. We preferred to take shower, wash our clothes (Washing clothes became something we like to do while in here. Since the weather was super hot, our clothes dry within minutes!), and rest.

We performed at the same place as the first one. The group from Uruguay came the day before and we performed with them that night. It was fun watching them. Our girls were crushing on one guy and amazed with the ladies by their toned and lean bodies.

The night had not over yet. We were told that there would be a party near the school with everybody, wohoo! It just began at 2am. We had to wake up early the next day but we didn't care. I even already packed my things earlier that day so I didn't have to be in a rush.

I thought they already prepared a particular place. We walked and saw some people already gathered with music played by the sound system. Guess what? Turns out they actually used free space, public street to be exact, in front of a warehouse! Mmm... I was speechless at first and tried to get what was going on. Then I saw a big trash bin and I was surprised there was sangria inside it! Plus, once in a while we had to move to the side if any car passed. Okay.

I came here to have fun so I didn't really care about the place anymore. We started taking the drinks and I couldn't wait to dance, but everybody seemed to be stand still. Our group became the only one who is uplifted. Then more Uruguayan people came. We started dancing again and this time everybody moved their body. The party was officially started! Some people from Uruguay led the dance at first and everybody followed. Some other people then did other moves in turns. We were having so much fun together. Since this is our last night, I didn't want to leave until everybody gone. It was such a great way to end the night (or start the day). It was nice meeting you guys and I hope to see you all again!

Today we only had performance in a nursing home in the morning. We met these elderly people who looked very old. We were supposed to entertain them but they seemed to be confused. Our Saman dance, which would be performed, required us to sing loudly and surprise the audience, but we decided to be less noisy than usual.

I feel bad for them. They were very weak, even to speak. The nurses really do take care of them and treat them nicely. After we finished our performance, we approached them. Still, some of them were confused even felt annoyed instead. But there were also some who smiled and even tried to talk with us, even though we understand nothing since they talked in Spanish. I hope our presence made them happy that day.
